Symptoms of a Bad Timing Belt

A worn timing belt may show a myriad of symptoms, such as strange noises coming from the front of the vehicle, a misfiring engine, and low engine power. In most situations, if the timing belt fails, the worst-case scenario is that engine will not run at all, and the car will not restart without replacing the timing belt. On other cars, a broken timing belt can result in permanent damage. It should be mentioned that some engines have a timing chain rather than a timing belt, but they do the same job. Other symptoms of a worn Timing Belt (or bad timing chain) may include the Check Engine light turning on, excessive engine vibrations, and ticking or clanking noises coming from the front of the engine. While not as obvious as other parts like the shocks (and struts), transmission, or brakes, the timing belt is an important part that needs attention.
